BUTHOD-GARÇON Gisèle, ceramic

"I sometimes wonder about continuing to use the raku technique when smoking is sometimes barely visible ... the raku responds to a violent need. The piece to be completed, needs this ultimate stage of smokiness. This implies a total commitment during cooking and out of the oven. It is a violent, rough, total body-to-body. It cannot be otherwise."

Gisèle BUTHOD-GARÇON

Biography

Born in Salon-de-Provence in 1954, Gisèle Buthod-Garçon lives in Gard, in the south of France. For more than 30 years she has been working on the Raku technique, moving from the container to the sculpture and constantly opening new ways for this ancestral technique.

The work of the clay is essential to her since 1976, after coming back from a trip in Senegal.  This link to Africa still throbs. The meaning of the sacred always operates.

Gisele Buthod-Garçon works the terracotta but not just any terracotta: a rough terracotta under the hand, very chamotte, which has to say. Cooking is done with wood until 1986, then with gas. A kind of personalized raku, heir to wild cooking from America in the 70s and carrying an immense sense of freedom.

Between 1982 and 1990, Gisèle Buthod-Garçon generated many forms with functional connotation without ever imagining that they could actually have one.

Since 2006, she closes more clearly its forms. Without ever falling into the principle of the installation which remains very foreign to her, she also conceives of bringing her pieces closer to each other in favor of an opening accumulation.
