WADECKI Elisabeth, Painting, guest arrtist, Jardins invisibles

For Elisabeth Wadecki, painting is not a projection but rather a trace of the circulation between subject and world. She attempts to capture the traces of nature's constant changes, allowing the invisible to infuse her work, inviting light and the vibrations of air and water. Her painting neither describes nor depicts; she dissolves the motif to grasp its smallest essence. Only colour, through a natural palette, connects her work to the notion of landscape, and it is indeed colour that drives her pictorial gesture.

Through layers, transparencies, additions, and removals, she creates pieces of work where the opacity and matte quality of the canvas play with the translucent and satin-like character of tracing paper. These material interactions, and successive overlays evoke the ebb and flow of the tides and her inner self. Like an ever-changing foreshore, the coloured surfaces spread, stretch, or thicken in a semantic interplay with the phenomenon of the tide line. The gesture plays on the fluidity of the acrylic medium in an art of letting-go when it is necessary to accompany the evaporation of a faint colour or the thickening of another.

More than just the motif of the wave itself, Elisabeth Wadecki captures its vibration, fluidity, and light. While firmly rooted in a tangible reality—the palette is naturalistic —her work should be seen as a celebration of painting itself, of colour itself. This constitutes a narrative abstraction that echoes Joan Mitchell's figurative abstraction. The two artists share an emphatic gestural style whose great sensitivity reveals that part of the world that escapes our senses.      Bertrand Charles, art critic.

Biographical notes

Elisabeth Wadecki, born in 1963 in Zurich, with a Polish father and a French mother, lives and works between Nantes and the Rhuys Peninsula in Morbihan.

She went to the National School of Art and Design in Nancy, specialising in Fine Arts, where she practiced life drawing, engraving, photography, and installation art. During her studies, her passion for textiles emerged, and for nearly 20 years she worked as a costume designer and assistant stage director for theatre and dance.

Since 2007, she has solely been an artist.

Textile and plant fibres have long been central to her practice. Her installations displayed on the ground, unfold as landscapes of memory, where personal history weaves seamlessly with collective destiny. Human beings and the issues related to exile are at the centre of her artistic concerns.

In 2012, painting became central to her practice, alongside a desire to reconnect with nature. Her landscapes, natural or personal, tell stories of abstract bodies and gestures.

In 2016, a series of works was launched featuring flexible storytelling, composing images in formation and transformation.

From her experience in the performing arts, she pays particular attention to the spatial arrangement of her work, constantly establishing a dialogue between painting and architecture, and developing a concept of “installed painting,” an expression coined by François Jeune, professor emeritus at Paris 8 University.

In 2022, she moved away from frames and began a series on paper, graphic abbreviations of landscapes, echoing Edouard Glissant’s thinking. The specificity of the marshes and territories of the Loire region, subject to tides and climate change, is at the heart of this work.

More recently, she has oriented her painting towards the idea of covering, disappearance, and revelation, working on canvases and tracings. Her artistic concerns around these notions echo geographical zones between land and water. Her painting embodies this movement as ‘modular painting,’ across a system of same-format modules that can be combined as desired. Her painting reveals a world of impermanence and conveys the fragility of nature and humankind.
